S(ave) O(ur) S(ouls) Pencils and Danica's Name

Here are the pencils for another Hibrida short story called "S(ave) O(ur) S(ouls)." I didn't render these as much as I've done in the past because I wasn't planning to do as much black shadowing on these. I wanted to do simple line art and do an ink wash for the ocean. I'll color these too as well. Just need a better tablet.

I did these pages in a 6 panel grid so I could force myself to think up more interesting and dynamic shots. I think this exercise has really improved my thumbnails on other works.

Also, I'm going to change Danica's name. As much as I love the name, which means morning star and I thought was appropriate for this story, there's a race car driver person named Danica and I've been advised to changed it so I will. I'll post here when I have a name cemented. Have a good weekend!

Shop Romance page 3 inks and sketches

The last page of the short story Shop Romance inked. I'll try to color and letter it quickly but I wouldn't expect it soon. I'll post other pages as well. This page was pretty fun to do, although it's not perfect I learned a lot from experimenting and playing around.

The other pages are from my sketchbook, just pages I feel like sharing. The first is a page with Damon Albarn of Gorillaz and Blur fame as well as some poses and notes for a project for class I'm working on. I'm still refining my thumbnails so here are some of the plans for shot choices.

The bottom image is a bunch of head sketches trying to find a face I like for a new character for Hibrida Prima. As you can see, there's more failures on this image than success but I thought this page showed a lot of the preliminary stages I'm taking for drawing heads. I'm still working on adding volume and shape to the heads, but that one with the shading I think shows it's helping.

Shop Romance Inks

Here are the first 2 pages of Shop Romance inked. I did these yesterday so I thought I'd post them up. I hope you like them.

All of these was traditionally done. I brush inked the majority of the art, mostly the figures and a lot of the rendering in the background. I used Microns for the stuff I wanted a more static line on like some of the line art for the ships. Although I do love to hatch if you can't tell.

Thank you!

Shop Romance Pencils

This is a short story for Hibrida Prima. I wanted to keep busy over my spring break so I scripted 5 shorts that I'll try to finish before June so I can show them at any cons I go to.

I really wanted to use these to try and develop not just Danica but the universe and the status quo therein. I'm hoping that these will serve as a good introduction to the Hibrida Prima worlds and people so it will be rather familiar to anyone who sticks around for the actual books. This will also help give some back story on some of the alien races as well as tell some quick fun and touching stories in a funky sci fi world.

Oh, this will also be great practice for me. I'm exercising muscles I recently began flexing during my Winter quarter at SCAD. The biggest two being anatomical mass and using graphic black shapes to define that mass as well as aid in storytelling. Honestly, these are things that seem to obvious to work on but it takes a pro to smack you (me) in the head and help me figure this stuff out. And I think these pages are already looking better than most of the work I've done thus far.

Hopefully I'll have these inked by Sunday and I'll post those. I'll also wow/horrify you all with my coloring. Until then!

Hibrida Inked Portfolio page

Pencils and inks for a page that I used in my portfolio. I recently had my stuff reviewed by editors at First Second Publishing, Oni Press, and Top Shelf Productions and I got some interesting feedback, from things I need to work on to thinks I'm doing well.  All in all, it was a great learning experience and I hope that next year I'll have a portfolio that will blow their socks off and move them to a room where their socks don't belong.

And I totally stole that joke from Matt Fraction. I hope he doesn't mind, the man is hilarious and also a genius. But I digress.

I'll post up more work when it's ready, I haven't had a ton of time to do any pages outside of class, but I'm trying to improve on my anatomy and volume when it comes to my figures. Here's hoping this step is in a good direction.

Animal Fan Sketch Challenge

Drawn for SCAD's weekly sketch challenge at the templeofcartoonmojo.blogspot.com. I love Jeff Lemire and Travel Foreman's Animal Man, it's dark and has great character development. I hope the inking shows some improvement.

Hybrida Play Inked

My pages for my Digital Design Issues Class. These pages will be colored by Tuesday, and I've got one done already.
